+ SonarMàtica in alphabetical orderIn this era of technological consumerism, some people are looking backwards, and restoring obsolete technology to use it in a new way. It is not a question of rejecting what is new, but rather an intelligent way of relating to technology. The term 8-bit, used to define chiptune music, comes from computers and consoles equipped with 8-bit chips for their sound. The GameBoy musical scene is probably the most widespread within this culture. Most of this music can be downloaded free on the Internet. Artists and hackers are constantly creating new technologies to use old hardware, and this is true of circuitbending - the art of changing circuits in order to obtain musical instruments, audiovisual works or objects which are a work of art in themselves.
microBCN is a local collective that promotes activities and events related to 8-bit culture in artistic spheres such as music, visual art, net-art and circuit bending. The collective is made up of artists who use “obsolete” computers and video game systems such as Commodore, Atari and Game Boy. Most prefer the latter as an instrument but this is not a dogma - the aim is organise events in which the objective is to connect with the public. They aim to spread the word by regularly organising workshops on circuit bending and creating software for making GameBoy music. In microBCN, chiptune culture is free and varied, involving artists from various countries and musical worlds. The collective is based in Barcelona and the surrounding areas, and has organised concerts and festivals at various venues. Most of its members have travelled around Spain and elsewhere, raising the profile of their music and visuals.
