Punk-o-Table

Dani García Rodríguez, Iván Hernández Gutiérrez and Miguel Ferreiro Novoa, who were all born in Barcelona in 1986, are final year students on the computer science engineering course at Barcelona's Pompeu Fabra University.

“Punk-o-Table” is a tangible musical game created for the Reactable platform. It is inspired by the Punk-o-Matic Flash game, created by Marco Arsenault and which is available online at www.punk-o-matic.net, and uses animations and sounds from it. “Punk-o-Table” allows music to be created in a simple and fun way, in a style similar to punk bands like NOFX and Millencolin. It consists of three tangible objects, each of which represents one of the three typical instruments in a punk band (guitar1, guitar2 and drums), and four extra objects that control the playback speed, change the number of bars the instruments play, pause playback and save or load compositions.

Each of these four instruments has a default setting of 8 bars (which can be changed by the user to 4, 8, 16 or 32 bars), and these can be completed with one or more different tracks and fragments of silence. A range of tracks is available for each instrument that can be selected by touching the slot or bar to be changed with your finger, and dragging your finger out of the object until you have chosen the new track. The duration of these tracks varies and they can also be cut or silenced as desired. If any of these objects-instruments are shaken, they can be emptied or a randomly generated combination of tracks loaded. Turning the object controls its volume within the mix. Meanwhile, the additional compositions loader/playback object allows creations to be saved and loaded, either from all the instruments, or from each one individually. Using these simple mechanisms, “Punk-o-Table” is a fun and straightforward way of creating an infinite number of themes and variations based on a small amount of stored material. As a result, it is possible to switch from creating punk music to any other musical style just by changing the sound tracks.
