SongExplorer

Carles F. Julià is a doctorate student at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and the creator of "SongExplorer". He is currently working on research into new applications for non-conventional interfaces in the knowledge acquisition process.

"SongExplorer" is a project for exploring musical collections. In a world in which the amount of available music is increasing exponentially, we need new methods to find the music that we might like. "SongExplorer" uses the immense ability of human beings to explore space (depicted by maps) to present a galaxy of songs in an ordered way, in which similar songs tend to be close to each other. Using the functionality of interactive tables, "SongExplorer" allows users to gesture with their fingers to browse this map, create and manipulate playlists and, obviously, listen to music. "SongExplorer" also uses the power of this type of interface to provide objects enabling more advanced browsing, either by showing more information or creating short cuts to specific views.

The project came about as the master's degree thesis for the Interactive Cognitive Systems and the Media Interdisciplinary Master's Degree in 2008. The project would not have been possible without Essentia, which is software for labelling music files developed by the UPF Musical Technologies Group, and Magnatune, a music distribution company with a Creative Commons licence.
