All eyes on Joker
Sónar 2009 | 10.06.2009

A little less than a year ago, the only Joker that anyone had heard of was the one played by Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight”. But in 2009, the Joker calling the shots is L. McLean, the dubstep and grime sharpshooter, the man behind Bristol's relocation on the international map of modern music, who is unanimously considered one of the essential producers working today. Joker emerged in 2008 as one of those artists pushing the dubstep code towards harder and more psychedelic textures - what he calls ‘purple sounds.' The reputation of the main man at the Kapsize label has snowballed since January, thanks to a hit on Hyperdub (“Digidesing”), a joint release with Flying Lotus on the Tectonic label and the impressive string of twelve-inches that he has released on Kapsize: “Do it / Psychedelic runway” and “Purple city / Re-up” - futuristic, aggressive and funky electronica, with gigantic basses and volatile synthetic sounds. Joker comes to Sónar in top form. He is the man of the moment.

Joker will be performing at in the showcase Mary Anne Hobbs presents (Highlights on BBC Radio 1) with Martyn and The Gaslamp Killer.
Sónar by Night, Friday 19th at SonarLab stage.
