Finding as much inspiration in the sounds around him as he does in the works of minimal composers like Erik Satie and Ryuichi Sakamoto, or experimental rock bands like Radiohead, Darren Ng aka sound-sculpter Sonicbrat can often be found crouching on the streets of Singapore, setting up his gear to record the noise around him. Whether it's sampling the noises made by a cicada coming out of its chrysalis, creating shimmering soundscapes with them on the Tenori-On, or rigging up a broken piano with contact mics and processing his own ethereal synth lines in Max/MSP: Sonicbrat approaches music and sound from every possible angle. Trained in classical piano, he has won awards for sound design for theatre, taking his sympathetic and delicate soundscapes to cultural establishments all round the globe, and receiving commissions from such institutions as the National Museum of Singapore and the Asian Civilisation Museum. As Sonicbrat he has released many LPs on The Asylum Sound label and on his own through the net.
